RHODE ISLAND STATE MEET

Sophia Gorriaran Wins Coveted First Cross Country Title; Devan Kipyego Repeats

By Mary Albl of DyeStat

Sophia Gorriaran has slowly been adding to her distance running resume the last four years as a prep runner.

Already a national name as a sprint/middle distance runner, particularly in the 800 meters, Gorriaran displayed her impressive range and hard work on Saturday at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Cross Country Championships.

After finishing third place as a freshman and second last year, the Mose Brown senior dominated the 5,000-meter course at Ponaganset High in North Scituate to win the girls title in 18 minutes, 18.15 seconds. It was her first cross country state title and adds to her list accomplishments that include an appearance at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the summer of 2021.

Gorraran’s time was more than 30 seconds faster than any other runner as La Salle Academy’s Caroline Cummings took second place in 18:59.72. East Greenwich won the team title with 67 points and was led by 2021 state champion Reese Fahys’ fifth-place finish. Cumberland was second as a team (89 points) and Moses Brown took third (120 points).

In the boys race, St. Raphael Academy’s Devan Kipyego defended his state title in 15:39.29. Kipyego will now look to win his first New England Championship next weekend.

Troy Silverstri of Bishop Hendricken was second (15:44.73). Bishop Hendricken put five scorers into the top 15 to win the state title with an impressive 46 points. La Salle Academy was second (89 points) and Cumberland was third with 124 points.
